AGENCIES RESPONSIBLE FOR
REVIEWING HOSPITAL COMPLAINTS
In Michigan, hospitals are evaluated and monitored by several agencies. These agencies and their responsibilities are described below:
Bureau of Health Systems (BHS): BHS licenses hospitals in Michigan and has a unit responsible for reviewing complaints about patient care. The Bureau of Health Systems is also responsible for reviewing complaints against physicians, nurses, and other licensed professionals. To file a complaint, contact:

Michigan Peer Review Organization (MPRO): MPRO reviews hospital utilization practices and the appropriateness and quality of medical care provided to Medicare patients. To file a complaint, contact:

Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO): JCAHO is a private (non governmental) agency that sets standards for hospitals. Most hospitals seek accreditation by JCAHO because it is required for reimbursement by many private health insurers as well as Medicare and Medicaid. To file a complaint, contact:
